Orsayor: Thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
Eriq: I was born and raised in Hartford Connecticut by a single mother. I left Hartford at 18 to attend the Juilliard School in New York. After two years I transferred to NYU. In 1997 I directed my first major project for HBO. The movie was Rebound: The Legend Of Earl The Goat Manigault, and starred Don Cheadle, Forrest Whitaker and James Earl Jones. I released my first novel Laws Of Depravity in 2012. The sequel Laws Of Wrath was released in 2014.
Orsayor: What are your thoughts on writing a book series.
Eriq: I actually love telling the stories of my characters through a series instead of a one-off. It allows me to continually show the depth and growth of my main characters as well as how each case that they investigate affects and changes them.
Orsayor: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Eriq: My directing career exploded last year and that has kept me going from one television show to the next. Trying to find the consistent time to write is quite a challenge.
Orsayor: What is the easiest thing about writing?
Eriq: The only easy thing about writing is thinking about writing.
Orsayor: How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Eriq: My first two books took me an average of three months to write. My current attempt has already far exceeded that and Im not even half way through it yet.
Orsayor: Do you ever get Writers Block?
Eriq: On average 90 percent of the time I try to write. Its the 10 percent that gets me through.
Orsayor: Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Eriq: Being an actor and director I actually choose certain actors that I base my characters on because my ultimate goal is to create not just a literary franchise with my novels but a film/television franchise as well. Although I write with certain actors and actresses in mind, I very rarely share those visions publicly because I prefer my readers to read my stories with a completely objective imagination so that they can receive the characters based much more on their own interpretation and not by the influence of my suggestions.
Orsayor: What is your favorite motivational phrase?
Eriq: Your talent is Gods gift to you, what you do with it is your gift back to God.
Orsayor: Is there one question above all else that you dont want to answer about yourself? What is the question?
Eriq: None that I can think of.
Orsayor: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Eriq: Patience and faith are much more empowering than I could have imagined.
Orsayor: What are you working on next?
Eriq: Besides directing shows like The Night Shift, CSI Cyber, Madam Secretary, and Under The Dome to name a few, I am currently working on the third installment of my thriller series. The book is entitled Laws Of Annihilation. Ive recently completed a family drama entitled The Book Of Ada which is loosely based on my mother, as well as certain dynamics of my childhood.
Orsayor: How can readers discover more about you and your work?
