The Bell Bottom High series introduces Reecy Jones, a book-smart, fourteen-year-old, high school freshman, attending Bell High School in the fictional town of Clifton, Arkansas. In this first book, one of Reecy’s classmates, Lena Turnipseed, comes to her for advice in the fall of 1973. Lena is pregnant and wants to run away from home to avoid embarrassing her professional parents, getting kicked out of her church, and attending an alternative school across town.
When I first saw the title of this book – I chuckled to myself. The memories of my high school days started to flood my mind. One incident, in particular, made me laugh out loud. My stepfather came home from work and said he had a surprise for me. When I opened that bag – there was a pair of bell-bottom polyester pants with the matching jacket. The year was 1988 – so there was no way I was going to wear those pants to school.
Reecy Jones is a freshman at Bell High School along with her best friend, Joyce. They were not a part of the CAP (cool and popular) cliques, but they were popular in their unique way. That’s one of the reasons Reecy is surprised when her classmate, Lena confides in her about the secret she has been keeping. Reecy is known as the responsible one amongst her family & friends – so keeping a secret of this magnitude is out of character for her. Will she be able to keep Lena’s secret – especially from her best friend, Joyce? Will her conscience get the best of her?
Author B. J. Williams delivers a relatable story that tackles an array of topics such as teen sex, friendships, and teen pregnancy. The author will also have readers reminiscing about the days we hung posters on our wall, read our favorite magazines, and dreamed of marrying our favorite celebrities.
Bell Bottom High: Book One is an excellent introduction to the Bell Bottom series. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
