moreA captivating novel of Renaissance Italy detailing the mysterious life of Bartolomeo Scappi, the legendary chef to several popes and author of one of the bestselling cookbooks of all time, and the nephew who sets out to discover his late uncle’s secrets—including the identity of the noblewoman Barto...
Full of history and dealing with one of my favorite topics, cooking, I enjoyed this historical fiction take on one of the most influential cooks of the time. Set in the 1500s, Ms. King has written an excellent book about a man that I had never heard of before, but now I want to know more about him.
Bartolemeo Scarpi was the papal chef to Pope Gregory. When he dies, he leaves everything to his apprentice/nephew Giovanni who takes his place in the Vatican’s kitchen. But there is so much more than him passing on his things as this is about a love affair, mysterious murders, and plots for revenge that left me thinking about the characters long after I read the book.
Well done Ms. King! I will be reading other works by this author.
