Amara and Ejike Dike are happily married; both have great careers, but the one thing that seems to be missing (in Amara’s heart) is a child. The couple has been trying to conceive with no success. Ejike tries to reassure Amara that regardless if they have a child or not, he will continue to love her. It doesn’t help that Ejike’s mother has threatened to make sure that Ejike took on another wife to bear children for him. In their culture, it is normal for a man to take on multiple wives. So out of desperation Amara and Ejike pursue fertility treatments. Will Amara’s dream of becoming a mother come to fruition?

When Amara’s cousin Chinelo shows up in the states, from Nigeria, little does Amara know that her world is about to turn upside down. Aside from the fact that Chinelo is on a mission to seek help, Amara is soon about to discover the ultimate betrayal was done against her. When it all comes out, Amara will have to struggle with keeping her marriage or letting it go.

When You Let Go by Unoma Nwankwor is a novel about betrayal, love and having faith.

I enjoyed reading about the culture of the Igbo in Nigeria that the author revealed here and there throughout the novel. That was what made this novel different from other novels. The problem lies in the fact that the storyline was typical of other novels. The novel is too descriptive where it doesn’t count (saying he was a Shemar Moore lookalike is not describing a character). The beginning of the story was slow, and some things were a little too predictable. With the characters having to face the difficulty in their marriage and having to rely on their faith in God it through it. The underlying lesson to learned from this is what made this an okay read.
